Century SubSonic 2i

Alpha SubSonic 2i photoThe Century SubSonic 2i is the current full-fledged companion subwoofer for our Century full-range speaker systems. It is the especially obvious partner for the Century tower systems (600i or 800i ). The SubSonic 2i ($649 U.S.) is about a fourth larger in cabinet size than the SubSonic 1. It uses a 12-inch woofer for its frequency coverage of 25 to 150 Hz, and is powered by a 130-watt RMS amplifier. It can produce its subterranean bass at volume levels that produce the full impact of Home Theater bass and sub-bass in living rooms from normal to fairly large size. The Century SubSonic 2i also provides not only a choice between regular speaker connection or line inputs that allow direct preamp connection, but also special speaker terminals that take the output signals of your power amplifier, receiver or integrated amplifier and channel the lows to the sub and the rest of the spectrum to the two main speakers of your system. The line inputs for use with separate preamps and amps incorporate a high-pass filter that keeps lows below 80 Hz out of your main amplifier.

The 45-pound SubSonic 2i is not as convenient to reposition as the 25-pound SubSonic 1, so it makes sense to do your experimentation early, over a few hours of set-up time, preferably (as with all our current subs) with the help of a willing friend who will let you sit there and make judgements while he or she does the grunt work and the manipulation of the sub's crossover (50-150 Hz) control, its volume control, and its phase switch. (Presumably, some compensatory time as the judge instead of the drudge — or perhaps a shower of money or jewels — will make your friend feel it is time well spent.) If you take the time for careful setup, and probably even if you don't, the Subsonic 2i will reward you with superb low frequency performance.
